CANTON RESTRICTIONS ON THE PRESS
ARBITRARY ACTION
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
HONGKONG, FEB. 5
The Canton-Hongkong newspaper represen- tatives' convention, on which Hongkong papers are not represented, has ordained that from to-morrow no Hongkong Chinese newspapers may be carried to Canton by air, and has arbi- trarily fixed prices at which delayed papers may be sold.
This action has apparently been taken at the instigation of the Kowloon City diplomatic aid committee, which denounced Hongkong newspapers for reporting the Shameen outrage. As nearly all the Canton papers are controlled by various political and military interests, most Cantonese rely on the Hongkong Chinese Press for world news. Now, although the Chinese Government denies that there is a Press censorship, Hongkong papers will not be delivered at Canton until the afternoon or evening and then can be sold only at un- remunerative prices.
