and the materials in them and the levels between which such

materials were found should be carefully labelled. It will be

better if the labelling of the different compartments be done by

writing with indelible pencil on the wood of the box and making

the box divisions wide enough for this purpose. Copies in a book

of the labelling of the boxes and compartments should be preserved.

It will be necessary to send us the journal and a diagram of each

boring and also a plan showing the position of each boring. A

certain number of the boxes containing samples of the borings

should also be sent to us. It will not be necessary to send all

the boxes provided these sent are typical and will, with the

description in the diagrams, enable us to form an opinion of all

material met with.

V.

As soon as the high tides again occur in the daytime,

it would be advisable to take some additional current observations.

The observations recently taken were on the low tides as the high

tides occurred at night when float observations are not possible.

VI. In additions to the borings and current observations, I

have asked Mr. Duncan to extend the lines of his soundings inland

at Hung Hom Bay and Tai Wan and take a series of levels on these

extended lines.

VII. Practically no observations have ever been made on the

movements of shoals in the harbour and consequently the Admiralty

Charts are almost the only source from which any deductions can

be drawn The fact that Hongkong Harbour is such a magnificent

sheltered deep water Harbour was probably the reason why very little

expenditure has been incurred in the past but the same reason

would, in my opinion, justify expenditure in keeping a record

of all changes and alterations. The large number of reclamations

completed, in progress or proposed will no doubt make their

influence felt in the future by causing some alterations and it is

important that a proper harbour survey on standard lines permanently

marked should be completed so that comparisons may be made from

time to time. I would like to suggest that the Staff of the
