REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE IN

THE MILITARY INTERNMENT CAMP

I. Committees.

An informal committee with Professor L. Forster,

Hong Kong University, as Chairman, met early in February, 1942, with

a view to starting a communal school. This Committee was recognised

by the Community Council, and it assumed an international aspect

when it was joined by Mr Rankine, representing the American Community,

and Mr Bolt, Dutch. On the formation of the British Community

Council under the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, Mr F.C.Gimson, Mr J.

Ralston joined the Committee as government representative.

This Committee held monthly meetings during the

whole period of internment, and during a part of 1944 weekly informal

meetings were held at which papers of an educ tional nature were read.

Miss Atkins, Father Meyer, the Rev.F.Short resigned owing to pressure

of work), Mr D.J.Sloss (also resigned), Professor R.Robertson,

Professor Brown, Professor W.G.Sewell, Mr J.Finnie, Mr A.Gilmour,

Mr B. Wylie, Miss E.M.Gibbins (Secretary).

II. The Schools

Senior (Age 12-18), Junior (Age 8-10), Kindergarten and Transition Classes (5-8) were held, with an average

total of 180 children. These schools were at first all held in the

Great Hall of St.Stephen's College. In September 1944, the Clubroom

of the Prison Officers' Club was made available from - 11 a.. for

the Kindergarten. Even after this, however, as many as 9 Senior

classes were frequently held in the Hall.
