Education in Hong Kong.

A letter has been received from Mr. T.R. Rewell, giving

· information on the present educational position in Hong Kong.

A considerable amount of damage has been done to buildings, not only by bombing and shelling, but also frem lcoting. "The moment the Japs relinquished control and before any p-lice force was in operation, the Chinese commenced looting, particularly for firewood, with the result that King's College was denuded of all desks and furniture, the staircase, the floors and the rocf." Bellilios Girls' School was similarly treated: Queen's College was completely destroyed by explosiv s. Many other schools have suffered. Ten aided schools opened on the 1st Cctcber, and also a few private Chinese Schools. Government teachers whose own schools are out of action are working at some of the aided schools to fill up gaps in the staff. Teachers are gradually returning, but they are suffering from long under-feeding. One man had walked back to Hong Kong from a village 300 miles away. Boys' Schools have suffered more than Girls' Schools, and as a temporary measure, some of the girls' schools have re-opened as co-educational schools.

Item 3. Advisers' Notices. (A). Written Mr. Cox reported as follows:-

Notices (1) and (2) had some bearing on what the Committee would be hearing later in the proceedings from Fr. Sloss and Hir. Cheeseman. It was satisfactory · that the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate had taken the action that they had regarding the examinations that had been and wore to be held in Malaya.

He had received a cheerful letter from Mr. Rowell in Hong Kong, with messages to members

of the Committeo.
