Invaliding of Police and Prisons

staff in India and Pakistan.

In accordance with arrangements re-

ported to you in my Secret despatch No. 20 of 6th (68) fl

June, 1947 for organising the return of the Indian Police and Prison contingents to which you gave general approval in your Secret telegram No. 1046 of 5th July, 1947, a certain number of officers were found to be unfit for further service and were accordingly invalided.

Such officers were examined by medical officers kindly lent for the purpose by the Lahore Government. In most cases a board composed of two medical officers was formed and their recommendations as to the fitness or otherwise of each officer was accepted by this government.

As the doctors involved were Indian Government officers (or Pakistan government officers in the case of those examinations at present being held in Lahore) I assume that there is no objection to their being used on behalf of this government and I should be grateful to receive your formal approval in order to satisfy the conditions of the Ordinance.

Pending your formal approval pensions and gratuities to officers who have been invalided in this manner are being queried by the Director of Audit and I should therefore be glad to receive your reply by telegraph.
