A statement of the position of advances recovered on behalf of the B.M.A. up to 31st March, 1949, is enclosed.

You will see from the statement that the balance outstanding on the 31st March, 1949, was $3,299,800.48; of this amount further recoveries totalling $989,713.86 have been made as noted in the margin, leaving the balance at present outstanding $2,310,086.62.
3. of the five items still outstanding, four are probably not fully recoverable, but in two of these cases (Bailey & Co Ltd., and Hong Kong & Whampoa Dock Co. Ltd., the outstanding balance will represent the cost of the work done by these dockyards for the Military Administration. Full details of the position in regard to (a) (b) (c) (e) and (f) will be forwarded separately.

The se accounts do not take into consideration the sale of B.M.A. stores, accounts for which have been kept separately, and I should appreciate it if the War Office could be persuaded to keep the two subjects distinct.
