25th February, 1947, in which position of Government servants who were not interned during Japanese occupation is discusset, Your suggestion, that officials have to some extent been able to meet increased cost of living from lump sum received in respect of period of occupation, could apply only to those, mostly European, who were interned. must be remembered that majority in this category have suffered large deductions from lump sum in respect of allowance paid to their wives and families in Australia, the United Kingdom or elsewhere, and it is precisely these married officers who are most hard hit by high cost of living. Many have also had to settle substantial debts incurred during interument. Rehabilitation grant of three months pay at 1941 rates, which was paid to un-interned officials as authorised in your telegram 50,463 C.A. of 8th March, 1946, has long been exhausted.
