STAFF.
Extension of the present Salary scale for Stewards, Medical Department, from $800 per month to $1,000 per month.
1.
The Salary Scale for Stewards introduced under the Salaries Revision is $640, 640 x 40 to $800 per month, and for Chief Steward $1,080 x 40 to $1,200 per month. There is provision on the permanent establishment for one post of Chief Steward and two posts of Steward, all of which have been filled. The Salaries Commission based its recommendation regarding the new scale for Stewards on a percentage increase over the pre-war scale, but the latter was a short scale, designed for officers without the full technical qualifications which are now required of candidates for appointment as Stewards, e.g., the diploma of the Institute of Hospital Administrators.
2.
The Director of Medical Services has represented that on the grounds of technical training and responsibilities the salary scale for Stewards should be the same as that for Radiographers, viz: $640, 640 x 40 to $1,000 per month, with an efficiency bar between $800 and $840 per month. The Conditions of Service Committee, to whom this matter has been referred for advice, has recommended that the scale for Stewards should be extended to $1,000 per month to bring it into line with that for Radiographers, provided that only officers with the requisite qualifications are appointed on the through scale. The Committee advised that no change should be made in the scale for Chief Steward.
3.
I am in agreement with the Committee's recommendation and should be grateful for your approval to amend the scale for Stewards as proposed above with effect from the 1st of April, 1949. The approval of Finance Committee has been obtained.
