instances are the badly paid and indifferently qualified ladies in the gall Joan Nyuk Maternity Hospital, the Lauhikok Infection and Venereal Diseases Hospital, the anchai Infection Diseases Hospital and the Sai Yung Pin Venereal Diseases Hospital.

Matronship in these small hospitals are possibly more taxing than "sister-ships" but they are not comparable in responsibility with the matronship of the two major hospitals. Hence the proposal that the matrons (and assistant matrons) should be paid according to their nursing rank with allowances if these were thought necessary. I would emphasize that the organization of the hospitals which have on their staff S/N/S's has never made provision for Assistent Hatrons.

(f) The Commission recormented more gonerous terms for nurses than had been proposed by the Medical Department. It acted by applying to Hong Kong conditions as near as possible to the recommendations of the Ruchcliffe Reports, differing where it dad differ, on the side of greater liberality. Scales of other professionsl women'a serviccs were fixed by reference to scales standard in the U.., the Burnham scales, the scales of the Joint Negotiating Committee and so on.

I hope this explains the recommendations on which you commented.

It was intended to send you this long ago. I much regret that it seems to have been overlooked and that it was not issueû.

Yours sincerely,

(Miss) D. P. Thyte
