2. Subject to your comments I will seek Treasury approval for the proposed charge.

3. The pensionable expatriation pay attached to a basic salary of £1550 p. a. as originally proposed was £300 p.a. making total pensionable emoluments of £1850 p.a. The pensionable expatriation pay as revised amounts to £280 p.a.

£1880 p.a. as now proposed.

4.

The Salaries Commission proposed a basic salary of £1550 p.a. for two posts besides that of Director of Audit (referred to as "Auditor" in Appendices to Report). These two posts are Deputy Director of Public Works and Crown Solicitor. Both these posts carry prospects of further promotion, so that to accede to the present proposal would not, I think, create an awkward precedent in respect of the other posts. Does Mr. King agree?

5. The only other post on a new basic salary of £1600 p. a. is that of Solicitor-General.

There is no post on a fixed basic salary between £1550 and £1600 p.a.

The salary recommended in the Sloss Report is £1550 plus £300 expatriation pay, making a total of £1850. Expatriation pay has, however, been reduced to £280, bringing the total revised salary down to £1830.

It is recommended that to make up for this reduction the basic salary should be increased to £1600, giving total emoluments of £1880. I must say that a further revision of the salary of this post on the above ground seeme difficult to justify in view of the fact that the
