to justify us in suggesting to the Governor that the salary proposed by the Salaries Commission should be reduced.

40 Further, it happens that the expatriation pay proposed by the Commission for the Principal Matron has been reduced, as a result of modification of the general expatriation pay proposals, from £200 to £168 per annum, so that her total emoluments will in any case be £32 per annum less than those proposed by the Commission. While this would not be relevant if we were satisfied that the basic salary proposed were definitely too high, it has a relevance in a doubtful case, which this seems to be.

5. I hope you can agree to our now signifying approval to the Salaries Commission scales for these Matrons' posts. You will have seen that we have had a telegraphic reminder from the Governor about them, and if it is possible for you to reply by telephone, therefore, I should be grateful.
