Dear Serpell,

1. Will you please refer to Bancroft's letter to me of the 15th March about the proposed basic salaries of the Matron Grade I and the Principal Matron Hong Kong?

2. The proposed salaries are:-

Matron Grade I £825 per annum Principal Matron £960 per annum

It has been agreed that £825 per annum for the Matron Grade I is reasonable and that the responsibilities of the Principal Matron justify a higher salary than that. Bancroft however felt that the difference £135. was too great in view of the salary which is, I understand, in mind for Nursing Officers of the Regional Health Board - viz. about £820. sought the advice of our Colonial Service Department and of our Chief Nursing Officer. I attach an extract from a note the latter has written.

3. While, as I said to Bancroft, we agreed that there seemed to be grounds for looking again into the salary proposed for the Principal Matron, on examination we do not think that there are grounds strong enough
