The increases in the various grados of the minor staff of the department, such as foromon, gangurs, motor mechanics, stecrsmen, bargomon and coolics are the result of a reduction in the working wook which was formerly 63 hours. In an offort to sccurc efficicnt results without tɔo largo an increase in coolic staff, arrangements are being mado to provide a greater proportion of competent supervision.

Under Special Expenditure, provision has boon mado for the continued building up of the floot of special type vehicles required for the work of the Sanitary Department to tho numbers required. It is hoped that the provision of mechanical stroot washers will make it possible to effect some reduction in the number of coolios onployed on the cleaning of the widor stroots.

It has become necessary to spend large sums on the replacement of barges. of war-time manufacturo supplied during the Military Administration period. These bargos were only designed for a short life as it was expected that a high proportion would be destroyed by enemy action. It will be necessary to replace a further number of these barges next year.

There has been a reduction of one Chinese Assistant, messengers and four office attendants. The reduction in messenger staff is due to the introduction of a motor delivery service.

One motor driver has been transferred to the Labour Office and the Mui Tsai Inspectorate staff have been transferred to the Social Welfare Office.

The Force, which was not under the direct control of Government in 1946/47, has been re-organised with a view to increasing the proportion of detective district watchmen. There has been a reduction of 8 in the total establishment.
