There is a reduction of onc post of Forester.
It has boon nccessary to provide increased sums for Forestry services and the protection of plantations. So far, the cost of re-afforestation has, since the reoccupation, been met from loan funds, but the departmental allocation is now exhausted and it has become necessary to meet the cost of completing the programme from rocurrent expendituro.

A sum of $239,500 has been included under Special Expenditure in order to completo the restoration of the grounds and gardens attached to Government buildings. Those reverted to junglo during the Japanese occupation and, in consequence, noed complete returfing. Hitherto, this exponditure has been met from loan funds, but the departmental allocation is now exhausted.

All grants to charitable institutions, some of which formerly appeared under the Charitable Services, Miscellaneous Services and Relief Section of the Medical Department Heads, havo now been collected together under this now Head "Subventions". As a result of this re-arrangement, it is not possible to give comparative figuros but the approvod estimato figure of $398,360 for 1947/48 given above, represents the total of the approved grants in the 1947/48 Estimatos for those institutions. The grants have been reviewed this year by the Social Welfare Advisory Committee who have recommended a number of incrcasos. The se, together with a number of now grants which Government was urged to make, reached the formidablo total of $1,157,132.
