Dear Miss Ruston, HONGKONG CHINESE ENGINEERING APPRENTICESHIPS.
Referring to our recent telephone conversation I confirm that Sir Frank Gill and I have now made our selections for the award of further apprenticeships to Hongkong students. The result is indicated in the attached list.
You will note that our selections correspond with the findings of the two selection Committees in Shanghai and Hongkong, indicated on page 2 of Sir Ralph Stevenson's Despatch, No.1025 of August 27th, 1946, with the exception that we have set aside the students placed 4th and 5th by the Selection Committees and have substituted those placed 6th and 7th.

The reason for this is that both applicants set aside are over age and appear to be too far advanced to be interested in the normal apprenticeship course. Moreover, they are both civil engineers and we find greater difficulty in placing them than in the case of mechanical or electrical engineers. If, however, the Hongkong Government are particularly anxious to give these two applicants experience in the United Kingdom we will see what we can do but it might well be that they can secure the experience they desire with Contractors or Consulting Engineers in Hongkong.
So far as concerns the applicant, No.30, H.K.WATT at the head of the list, this student also is well over the normal age and desires an advanced course in automobile engineering. We are not certain whether we can provide this but are willing to approach appropriate Works. Before doing so, however, we would like to know whether The British Council, to whom Mr.Watt has also made applica- -tion, are willing to grant him one of their Scholarships.
