Dear Sir,
Thank you for your letter of the 6th inst., concerning the arrangements made, for the payment of my scholarship allowances. I am sorry that I have several requests to make and ask for your kind consideration. (1) The Metropolitan-Vickers Co. Works will shut down form 5 p.m.,26th inst., till 7.30, 5th August. During this shutdown and. the extra week leave allowed by that company for wach apprentice ( I am arranging to have a trip to North England and Scotland during that shutdown and the extra week allowed), and any casual leave and sick leave, I understand that the Metropolitan-Vickers Co., will not pay me. So I would be extremely glad if you will arrange with that company to pay me just the same during such leaves, or you will pay me instead, so that I would receive £30 a month without any cut to affect my living. As it is, 230 a month does not mean so much now as it was eight months ago when I took my scholarship examination in Chungking. And the cost of living is rising still, which puts so much strain on my nerves. (2) My income tax for the passing weeks is 10 shillings a week. I understand that some F.B.I. scholarship holders do get their income tax refund by somehow or other. I should be very much appreciated if you will refund me my losses through income tax.
(3) I had spent £2.0s ¿d. for my journey from London to Manchester on the 12th May. I would be very glad if you will refund this amount to me. The detail of the expenses is as follows:-
Taxi paid from Earls Court to Auston Station,
London, (with luggage)
Train fare from Buston Station, London

Train fare from London Road Station
Manchester to Sale, Cheshire
Taxi fare from Sale Station to
