am very sorry to learn from Brigadier MacDougall telegram No. C.A. 1609 of the 24th January that the copies of the Order in Council setting up the University of Hong Kong "Medical Degrees Emergency Committee" were not attached to the letters of appointment to yourself and members of the Committee. I attach six copies and should be grateful if you would distribute them.

Mr. Sloss telephoned me recently to ask if it was expected that the Committee would be able to confer these "emergency" medical degrees in the near future as two of the candidates listed in the enclosure to Dr. Gordon King's letter to him of the

(3) 15th August are now in this country on scholarships

FURTHER ACTION

for the purpose of undertaking post-graduate studies and I understand that the authorities of Edinburgh University wish to have formol prooi that these scholarship holders are graduates of Hong Kong University before sâmitting them to Edinburgh

I hope therefore that you will be able to convene the Committee and conter the degrees in the near future.

As I think I mentioned to you when you were here the luture of the University is now being considered by an Advisory Committee appointed by the Secretary of State. The Committee includes four members of the Asquith Commission two of whom have been nominated as members of the Inter-University
