so largely undermined by the thoughtless conduct of others who have

neither considered and understood the Chinese character nor valued

friendly relations between Britain and China.

The British are not a people who say much about the good

they do. As one who loves and admires them, I trust it will some day

be my privilege to write, telling my Chinese friends of the services,

goodwill and sacrifice of British people for the Chinese, of their

friendly aid to China, of the impracticability of Chinese in now

demanding the return of Hong Kong, and of China's foes without and

within, so that the evil work of enemies of both peoples may at

least to some extent be frustrated.
