Miss Ruston reported that a small executive Committee was about to be set up in London under an Order in Council for the purpose of dealing with certain financial affairs of the University particularly in regard to meeting the obligations of the University

In addition to its staff for the period of the Japanese occupation. this Committee would if necessary have powers to terminate appointments and to make new ones.

The Committes agreed that in view of this arrangement the re was no immediate need to reconstitute the administrative bodies of the University in Hong Kong.

The Committee returned to a detailed consideration of the staff required for the satisfactory working of Departments in the University suggested in the Minutes of the previous meeting.

A. Faculty of Arts.

(i) There was general agreement that the Department of English was of major importance and that additional staff was required. It was decided that the reconstituted Department would need:

1 Professor

1 Lecturer

(English)

1 Lecturer Chinese

3 Junior Lecturers and

Tutors (the number to be determine a-according to the size of classes).

The additional Chinese Lecturer of wide competence in English was thought necessary for the developing of comparative studies in English and Chinese Literatures.

(ii) Mathematics.

1 Professor

1 Reader

A staff of:

Tutors

was thought necessary for Honours Courses in Mathematics. Teaching in Pure and Applied Mathematics would be divided as between Professor and Reade r. If Engineering teaching were tɔ continue, additional staff might be necessary.

(iii) History. A staff of:

The Professor would be concerned with Western History and the Reader with Chinese and Far-Eastern History.

(iv) Social Studies. After considerable discussion it was agreed that a small subcommittee consisting of Mr. W. Adams, Professor Hinton and Mr. Sloss should draft proposals after consultation with Sir Alexander Carr-Saunders or another authority.

(v) Chinese Studies. It was agreed that the existing establishment of:
