MARINE BICLOGY:
Hong Kong os restricted in the fields of Botany
and Geology by the relatively narrow range of
types of object and phenomena that its goographical situation.
affords but for Marine Biology studies it is remarkablay favourably
placed. With the assistance of a grant from His Majesty's Govern-
ment a boginning has already been made to establish a Fisheries
Research Institute. The Institute is to be a joint rosponsibility
of the Hong Kong Government and the University, which will be
responsible for the control of the Institute in its scientific
work. Part of the staff has been at work since 1939 and the
buildings would have been completed and equipped but for the War.
The Chinese Government and Universities have already initiated a
scheme of Fisheries Research and the University of Hong Kong
was working in friendly co-operation with Chinese institutions
at Amoy and Foochow. This co-operation might be extended with
admirable results on both sides. In the Faculty of Science the
minimum staff in the different Departments were estimated at :
Chemistry.
