to a total of 28, of wham ·ɛ.minimum of 9 are to be Chinese; are registered graduates nominated by the registered graduates of the University and three nominated by governing bodies of aided schools. Members are nominated for terms of three years.

The Chancellor is president and normally presides at meetings which are held at least twice a year at the first meeting to pass the budget and at the second to pass the audited accounts.

The Court has power

(a) to establish degrees, diplomas, etc.

(b) to provide for instruction - make provision for

"research and for the increase and dissemination

of knowledge".

to determine conditions of affiliation of other institution.

(a) to institute suspend or abolish teaching posts,

fellowships exhibitions etc.

(e) to prescribe the duties of the officers it may

appoint (i.e. the Vice-Chancellor and Treasurer

on the nomination of the Council) (Ord. Sec. 12(5)) cr to appoint committees to select candidates for the posts to which it may appoint.

(f) to make, amend or repeal statutes (Ord. Sec. 13(2))

with the approval of the Governor-in-Council (Ord. 13(2)).

The Treasurer is appointed by the Court on the recommendation of the Cruncil (ord. sec. 12(5)). He is appointed for three years (St. 5). He is chairman of the Finance Committee.

The Vice-Chanceller is "the chief administrative officer of the University" (Ord. Sec. 12(3)). He is chairman of the Council and the Senate.

The Chancellor, who is the Governor of Hong Kong (ord. Sec. 12(4)) is "the head and principal officer of the University" (Ord. sec. 12(2)).

The Chancellor may preside at any meeting of any University body (st. 671)).

There is appeal to the Chanceller against the action of the Court in revoking the appointment of any officer of the University (Ord. Sec. 12(7)):

The Visitor is His Majesty or any person appointed by

His Majesty in that behalf.

Provision is made for the appointment of committees by the Court, Council and Senate "for the purpose of giving advice and assistance".

It is a statutory obligation that "one external and independent examiner" shall be appointed for each subject or group of subjects forming part of the course of studies required for degrees. (Ord. Sec. 14).
