Accruin: pay of Goverment officinis.

Mr. Jones sold that the Treasury had already decided that pay chould socrue during interent in the case of pensionable start, whether locally or externally enggod; and of non- pensionable staff if externally engaged. The Trensary head not agreed so fe; to salery eccruing in the case of non-vensizpable locally on arod steff, so it was thought that being non-pensi noble the cunt at Ith the official had been frustrated owing to the Journe.c oc upation, and bain locally engaged there was no moral responsibility on the Government for having retained the official in danger arca. Er. Gent contended that even in these latto. casco, whore the op ontant had taken plsce prior to the passing of the relative Compulsory Service Ordinance, that the official could have loft the danger area had he wished, an? the fact that after the passing of the relative Ordinances be ves obliged to remain there, and was then captured, placed a moral obligation on the Govenmont to continue to pay his salary Whilst he was interned. (The dates of coming into foree a. the relevant Ordinances and being ascertained).

Gent therefore pressed the Treasury to agree that in these partilouler 08588, where the o iciels had been interned they should also be granted the benefit of no ruing poy during the period of intermusen te In tik dose of tho e not granted the benefit of accruing pay, three months way in lieu of notice would have to be granted. 'Mr. Janos promised to consider these pointa sympathetically and

to obtain a decision as early as possible.

The question of the sa istance to be nocorted to officials who had not been intered was not mentioned at the meeting; but in subsequent discussion with Er. Jamaa, In. Palmer expressed the view that in the case of any official who had rofused to serve the Japanoas and who had netively assisted in the fight against the Japanoce Forces, they would have to receive the Banc benefits as li they had been intermed. In the case of officials who had not been intoned and who had either continued to serve in their pro-divasion posts or who had othervise romained at liberty to continue auch occupations
