Dear Miss Ruston,
The request is for a sum equivalent to the total of the
grants which the University would normally have received from
the Government of Hongkong for the period April 1st 1941 to
September 15th 1945
-
a total of
H.K.$1,560,000 = £104,000.

(The grant for the period April 1st
to December 6th 1941 when the University ceased to operate had
not been received). The first purpose is to have funds to meet
salary claims from members of the Staff for the period of
internment. It is desirable that when the payments to the
Staff have been made the University should have money with which
to commence the re-equipping of Laboratories, especially the
elementary laboratories for Chemistry, Physics and Biology, the
first step towards the re-establishing of medical studies.
It is proposed that the Staff, European and Chinese, should
be given full pay (less a deduction equivalent of any amounts
earned during the period for war work or any other form of
employment).
