(37). Mr. Sloss told me verbally that he agreed with the draft behind (37). (The original draft telegram, which had been agreed by Mr. Palmer, seems to have become detached from the file.) This was designed to urge the Government to arrange for work to be started on essential repairs to the University buildings at once, since it appeared from a letter which Dr. Gordon King wrote to Mr. Sloss on the 16th June that nothing had been done up to that date and that the matter was awaiting P.W.D. estimates. Meanwhile, however, the telegram of the 18th July at (38) has arrived. This shows that repairs have now been started and that immediate provision for the cost has been made. therefore, now no need to telegraph to Hong Kong as proposed in (37).
