I have to thank you for the mass of useful advice you gave me yesterday. The inventories of basic equipment for laboratories are, for institutions
for institutions placed as this University is, of immense value. You have done in full detail and with great precision, work on which I and other similarly placed would have had to spend many months without hope of achieving so perfect a result. I am sure that the Colonial Office Committee on the future of long Kong University will be not less appreciative than I. I certainly accept most cordially your offer to let me have copies of the inventories for the information of the Committee. Dr. Priestley, V.C. of Birmingham University and Sir Herbert Eason, Chairman of the General Medical Council are the members who have interested themselves in the problem of the rehabilitation of our science departments.

May I raise a related issue? A host of institutions in China, Malaya and Burma are placed as we are. laboratory equipment is completely looted or destroyed. All will be, as it were, in the market at once, and I am apprehensive about the results of competitive buying. would help us enormously if some means could be found to protect us against inflated prices.
