Dear Mr. Sloss,

As you know Major E.J. Lugard has

very kindly offered to the University the

gold trowel presented to his brother when

he laid its foundation stone. On his return

from leave Sir Arthur Dawe wrote to

Major Lugard as in the letter of which I

attach a copy. Major Lugard suggests,

however, that he should deliver the gold

trowel to the Colonial Office as he is "an

endeavouring to put his house in

old man

order".

reply. It occurs to me that you may now
