Dr. Needham telephoned to me
this evening to say
1) that he was about to send us what he
thought would be a useful note of his suggestions regarding Hong Kong Univer- sity. The point of it would be that we should stress the provision at H.K. University of certain classes of higher education (particularly in scientific fields) which are deficient and much needed in China itself;
(2) that he had met a friend of his,
Mr. Pagden of the Malayan Service, who has a knowledge of Chinese and who he would have found useful for scientific work with himself in China, but he under- stood that Mr. Pagden had been brought back for service in connection with Malaya and that he might not therefore be available. He added that Mr. Pagden had expected to be quickly and fully occupied on reaching Englund, but he had, in fact, been here three months without being called upon and was feeling a trifle browned off.
