other persons qualified to assist in restoring the life of the

Colony should be met but that policy regarding the future of

the University should be fully considered. In these

circumstances I have decided to set up a Committee to be

known as the Hong Kong University Advisory Committee.

Briefly the functions of this Committee may be taken

as the tendering of advice on the question of whether or not

the University of Hong Kong as such should continue to exist

and if so the policy which should govern its resuscitation

and secondly to advise in some detail on the steps necessary

to restart such of the work hitherto undertaken by the University

as is essential for the needs of Hong Kong whatever the

decision arrived at on the broader issue,

This ad hoc Advisory Committee is one to which I attach considerable importance and I am very glad to know that we

shall have the benefit of your knowledge and experience in

considering the issues which I have indicated.
