One further point arises for decision, if the main recommendation is approved, i.e. whether Professor Channon, who has now recovered his health, should be given another opportunity to join the Committee, especially since one of the aspects of long term policy which will arise is
Professor Channon's own thesis that instead of separate universities in Malaya and Hong Kong there should be a British University for the whole of the Far East. On this issue, the proposal is that, if the Committee is constituted as now recommended, Mr. Cox should be authorised to explain the matter to Professor Channon and give him an opportunity of expressing a desire to serve on the Committee, if he so wishes.
Mr. Cox has also suggested that, in
addition to the members of the Committee suggested in paragraph 13 of No. 47, it would be valuable also to invite Mr. Burney, H.M.I., who is a member of the
I A.C.E.C. and who visited Hong Kong in 1934. agree with this recommendation.
I understand that Mr. Creech-Jones has enquired what our proposals are for dealing with the rehabilitation of Hong Kong University. In this connection I should mention that Mr. Sloss, Vice- Chancellor, will be attending the meeting of the A.C.E.C. tomorrow and wishes to express his own personal view about the long term future of the University. We see no great objection to this, but he has been warned not to mention the proposals, BROSISÄÄNA on this file, for setting up this Advisory Committee or its terms of reference.
