Mr. N.L. Smith Mr. Rowell.
Consideration of the suggestion that a small committee should be set up to represent the University of Hong Kong and advise on plans for its restitution has been held up while a paper on the University was prepared for the Far Eastern Committee. Before seeking the approval of higher authority on this proposal, I should like to have an agreed minute of the meeting held on the 29th December last. Would you please see Dr. Kauntze's minute of the 29th January and in his absence say whether you think the amendment which I have pinned over para. 4 of (3) represents what was agreed at the time.
Perhaps Mr. N.L. Smith would also very kindly suggest an alternative sentence for paru. 7. wide his mute of 30/1
Mr. N. L. Smith has suggested Mr. Middleton- Smith for the Committee. It is very doubtful whether Mr. D.F. Davis will be available since it is proposed to employ him in India in the Hong Kong Planning Unit. It seems that Mr. Sayers is doubtful. I am not sure either about Professor Cnannon. hould you kindly say whether you can think of any other names which should be considered?

§ 4: My recollection is that it was decided (a) that medical students now finishing their courses in Chinese Universities should not be pulled back to Hong Kong before graduation; (b) that their emergency duties on re-occupation would be an adequate substitute for normal post-graduate study or "walking the wards". I should have thought that this would make any reference to courses for "fourth to sixth year students" out of place, but any medical man could say whether this is so or not.
$ 7 : I have now been told that the meeting did in fact approve something like a prematriculation "cram" If so, stet. Mr. Rowell will probably comment.
I can think of no other names for the Committee except just possibly Mrs. L. Forster, wife of the interned Professor. She is very learned and capable.
N.L. Smith.
