It may be that some "inspired" journalist started the "news" about the alleged race between Chinese and British forces to be the first to reach Hong Kong. Inquiry produced the following official pronouncement:
"In Chinese diplomatic circles in London it is categorically stated that no credence should be given to recent sensational Press reports of a race between Chinese and British forces to reach Hong Kong first. Nothing is known here of such a race. What is known is that China has no intention to seize any Allied territory whether Hong Kong or any other. Whatever military dispositions may be made to help in liberating enemy-occupied territory will be undertaken by China as a partner in the joint struggle against Japan, now happily about to be formally ended. It is the established policy of China to seek settlement of any and all questions affecting her interests only by amicable negotiation and agreement. Sino-British relations have been and will remain most friendly."
