I can best give an idea of the work required by quoting
general remarks appended to each yearly report :-
During the period under review I have observed that the
dental health of internees ooming te me for treatment is very low. Their
gums have receeded due to the lack of hard foods, fruits and generally
properly balanced diet and the difficult of obtaining brushes, powders,
pastes, etc., with which to keep the mouth and teeth properly clean.
The teeth interstitially have become clogged with the soft
foods which, as the teeth could not be properly cleaned, has caused decay
and, in some instances, the pulp of the teeth has completely oellapsed,
necessitating extraction. It is particularly to be noted that it was
necessary to extract sighty-seven permanent teeth from sixty-six children
under the age of 16 years, which is in excess of the average in norman 1.
practice. It has also caused fillings to become loose and fall out. As
a result of the general shrinkage of the gum tissues of people wearing
dentures, many plates have cracked or broken.
