11. CHINESE.
(1) Reports from intelligence sources, raded B-2 indicated that reaction was very noticable to the announcement of the death of young Chinese girl at the hands of a British Naval rating on the night of October 5th. The news of the event travelled fast and far among Chinese population, and from preliminary reports discerning local elements, it appeared that Chinese expectations were that (1) swift action would follow, which should be well Fublicised, and (2) the deal penalty should be xacted from the offender. These local elements gave it as their opinion that a case such as this was just what anti-British Chinese agitators had been waiting for, and that they might use it as an excuse for making trouble on the "double 10th". In consequence, an official statement was made in the local press to the effect that an inquiry was being held, and leave to liberty men of the Fleet on the "double 10th" curtailed by 3 hours so as to have men back on board before dark.
