MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENTS RELATIVE

TO JAPANESE SURRENDER AT HONGKONG

The following agreements have been reached,

with reference to the acceptance of surrender of the

Japanese forces at Hon kong by Rear Admiral Harcourt;

1. Time of Surrender. The surrender of

Japanese forces on Hongkong Island to Rear Admiral

Harcourt is to take place as soon as practicable follow-

ing the overall surrender at Nanking of Japanese forces

within the Generalissimo's areas of responsibility.

Date now estimated for the Hongkong surrender is the 10th

or 11th of September. The Chinese have no objection/

whatever to elements of the British fleet arriving at

Hongkong before the date for surrender, landing troops on

Hongkong Island, disarming Japanese, setting up Civil

Administration, and taking such precautions as Admiral

Harcourt considers necessary provided the surrender is

not signed until the agreed date.

2. Military Information.

The British

commander at Hongkong will furnish to General Chiang Kai-

shek, through General Fan, or other authorized representa-

tive all military information obtained from the Japanese

forces at Hongkong. Specifically, the British commander

in Hongkong will require the J panese commander at Hong

Kong to furnish in duplicate to the British commander, at

or immediately following the Hongkong surrender, all of

the information required by the terms of General Order
