with keeness and efficiency and I was able to take a much-needed rest which I had been unable to have since the day war broke out.....In conclusion I would like to point out that Sergeant Campbell did some very good work while at Bay View, and was eventually wounded while assisting the A. R. P. to distri- bute rice to the public.

"L. S. Al67 Matthews showed excellent character in volunteering in returning to Aberdeen with me on the night of December 25th and high morale during the four days following. He was not stationed at Aberdeen before this,"

"L. S. C553 Shum Wai showed considerable courage and devotion to duty all through It was largely owing to his efforts that no looting or disorder took place during hostilities at Aberdeen. He even re- turned to Aberdeen in uniform after the capitulation and assisted me until after the Japanese arrived. He was still in uniform when we passed through on our way out on December 29th."

"I should like to add that L. S. Al3 Whitley carried out his work very con- scientiously. He worked long hours obtaining rations from Hong Kong, and at n night he spent half the time at the Lewis Gun Post. He fought the gun frow about 21.30 hours on the 24th till it went out of action. I was engaged in the Station and joined him at about 23.00 hours (24th) after the Indians had deserted and the Japanese were close to the station. A stoppage had occurred in the gun and neither he nor the Middlesex could repair it. We then threw hand grenades and assisted in feeding the Middlesex machine guns. We first mounted the Lewis Guh on or about the 12th December and took turns in manning it nightly from 22.00 to 06.00 hours.

"I should like to mention the good work done by L. S. Al09 Farquhar and L. S. A129 Jackson. They carried out their duties very conscientiously in going all over the Island distributing food, frequently under fire. They worked together and kept the guards well supplied and maintained their own and their men's morale.
