"the station on our return we found it was being shelled. The gate in Jaffe Road was locked and the guard had taken shelter in the station so we remained outside making use of what cover we could. During a lull in the shelling we ran to the gate & called out to the guard who after a while came & opened the gate. No sooner had we got into the compound then the shelling again started and P.C. B162 Taja Singh, who had stopped behind to lock the gate, was hit in the back and legs and other parts of the body by shrapnel. P. S. A53 Brown and myself lifted him inside where Sergt. MacVey admin- istered first aid. It was impossible to get any first aid or hospital conveyance so P. S. A53 Brovm & L. S. A176 Bodie volunteer- ed to drive him to hospital in one of the station lorries. This they did under great difficulties, the station compound & road outside were under heavy shell & mortar fire and their action is indeed worthy of award. Sergt. Brown especially was a most willing worker during the two days, 24th & 25th December, volunteering to do work under all conditions, & remaining quite calm throughout."

(Please see Diary Entry No. 8 of 24th December) "I cannot recollect the other mem- bers of the party who assisted Sergeants Brown & Brodie in conveying the wounded man to hospital but accept Inspector Whant's report (Paragraph X1 (b)) that Sergeants Leslie & Gordon took part."

"I consider any man who assisted in carrying the wounded Indian Police Constable out to the lorry is also worthy of some recognition. I cannot remember whether L. S. A177 Lewis

did so but accept Inspector Whant's state- ment that he did. He was not so long ex- posed as the actual occupants of the lorry as the vehicle had to be driven through a shelled area but Lewis showed courage in doing all required of him."
