Police were placed on duty at street fountains during the day to control the crowds and ensure economical use of water.
About one dozen The Unit searched the Hong Kong Hotel. Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps officers and men, most- ly Portuguese, were found and sent back to their Units.

General instructions were issued to Police Water Front patrols only to put up an active resistance to enemy troops while they were attempting a landing. Once the landing was effected Police were instructed to withdraw and report to the nearest Station, leaving a portion of the patrol behind to keep observation on the movenemt of the enemy.
Upper Levels. 11.00 Heavy shelling of Upper Levels Station and its vicinity
took place. The Station received heavy damage along its frontage and slight damage was sustained to the roof. Cars in front of the Station were hit.

Two shells landed in Park Road. One fell near the Police Dispersal Point but failed to explode.
11.00 As the result of an air raid the Naval Dockyard was com-
pletely wrecked and set afire. All Police turned out. The main road from Aberdeen to the Naval Headquarters was under heavy shell fire with snipers operating from Brick Hill. The Police disposed of the bodies. (The Officer in Charge estimates fatal casualties from bombs and shells occurring in the Aberdeen district, including Aplichau am the harbour, to this date to have been about 275.).
11.00 The Unit was engaged as stretcher bearers moving convales-
cent wounded soldiers into the Hong Kong Hotel.
13.00 Sub Inspector Smith, the Officer in Charge, returned to the
station at Nos.183 and 184 Mount Kellett Road and found. it to have been badly damaged by shell fire. All the Police, including Interpreters and detectives, had deser- ted the station with the exception of five Weihaiwei men, namely: L.S.D. 206 and P.C.Ds 148, 157, 243 and 191. The Police who had gone had left without permission and most of them reported eventually at Police Headquarters. 15.45 On instructions from the Commissioner of Police, Mr.
Wright Nooth, Assistant Superintendent of Police, and a volunteer Police party consisting of Sub Inspector Taylor, L. S. A.79 Appleton, L. S. A. 73 Haynes, L. S. A.98 Michie and L. S. A. 83 MacDonald proceeded to Aberdeen in order to attempt to obtain 1000 hand grenades from the Military magazine at Shouson Hill. The Military however on the
