06.30 A party of Police from Police Headquarters under Insp.
Cunningham and L. S.A. 142 Kinloch searched houses in the Village Road area. The enemy were observed opera- ting in the Broadwood Road and Gap Road area.
07.30 An air raid took place on the Naval Dockyard. Aplichau
and Aberdeen main road was shelled with casualties. Police removed bodies from Aplichau to the cemetery. Heavy bombing and shelling continued.
Air raids and shelling continued. On report that bad characters were to be found in First and Second Streets. Police patrolled there without incident.
The Military ammunition dump at Mount Austin barracks was hit by a bomb and exploded. Water had to be car- ried by hand and the difficulty of dealing with the fire was increased by exploding ammunition. 11.00 The relief of men at No.2 Station was effected.
Mr. Heath, Assistant superintendent of Police, and his men returned to Police Headquarters and Mr. Luscombe, Assistant Superintendent of Police, with Inspectór Whant and a fresh batch took their places. 11.30 The Unit was called to Kennedy Road on complaint by
the Military of Fifth Columnist activity. After con- sultation with the Military Medical Officer in charge of the First Aid Post there, several houses in the vicinity of the Union Church were searched without result.
Upper Levels. 13.00 Some shells fell in Robinson and Conduit Roads causing
few or no casualties.

16.30 The Police Fire Brigade engine was struck by a H.E.
shell near the Matilda Hospital and destroyed.
17.00 A report was made that the Japanese had landed at Vic- toria Road below the Dairy Farm. The Divisional Inspe tor West visited and found that it was a false report.
p.m. The Headquarters of the Middlesex Regiment was moved
from Ventris Road to Gilman's Garage. The Military requested Mr. Luscombe, Assistant Superintendent of Police, to arrange for the following Police patrols behind the front line to work from 18.00 to 00.06 hours nightly in lieu of the Police fixed Lewis gun patrols formerly manned in the front line: (1) Gap Road and Queen's Road East to Arsenel Street, (2) The Water Front from Arsenel Street to Percival Street, (3), Canal Road West from Gloucester Road to Leighton Hill Road. In addition a fixed Lewis Gun post was still maintained on the first floor of the Station to repel a possible landing near the Station. The British front line then ran from the sea front to Percival Street to Lee Theatre round Happy Valley to Blue Pool Road to Wong Nei Chung with an advance force on Leighton Hill.
