The Station building, already evacuated, was hit by three shells.
Shelling continued. Reports were made of attempts to extort money from residents in Queen's Road West and Des Voeux Road' West for "protection". Police took action under orders from the Director Criminal Inves- tigation and arrests were made.
Mr. Booker, Assistant Superintendent of Police, remov ed from the Special Constabulary Headquarters at Ven- tris Road and returned to the Gloucester Building. Police were despatched to Hollywood Road to control rice queues.
Some little trouble had occurred before the arrival of the Police but this was soon satis- factorily settled.
10.30 The Unit was called to Queen Victoria Street where it

11.00 P.S.A.162 Williamson was instructed by the Senior

superintendent of Police, Defence, to reoccupy Aber- 14.00 deen Station. Sergeant Williamson gave instructions
to L.S.A.145 Goldie to bring his party back and the same orders were repeated to P. S. A. 155 Fitzpatrick through the Inspector on Duty Western. The Officer in Charge, with Mr. Searle 's, Assistant Superinten- dent of Police, permission returned himself to the Station in advance. He learnt there that the Japan- ese advance had been stopped at Wong Chuk Hang near the Industrial School. During the afternoon and evening Srgts. Goldie and Fitzpatrick returned with six Chinese Police Constables and four returned in- dependently.
12.45 Cases of demanding money for "protection" from house-
holders were reported. A party of Police were left at No.10 Square Street but the culprits failed to return. During the shelling of the Peak a number of shells fell short to land in Conduit and Robinson Roads, some landing near Police posts. One Indian Police Constable was slightly wounded near the Filter Beds.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Defence, prepared and submitted a report to the Commissioner of Police concerning the Police action with the enemy at Shaukiwan.
p.m. The Indian Guards from Wong Nei Chung arrived at
Upper Levels station stating that enemy troops had arrived at Wong Nei Chung some time the previous day (exact time is not now remembered) and that they had only just managed to evacuate in time after contact with the enemy. An European Volunteer had led them but had been killed. They had made their way back to Hong Kong via Aberdeen.
18.00 General shelling became severe with many casualties.
A. R. P. personnel evacuated and ceased to function.
Personnel of the Rescue & Demolition squads and Food Kitchen and Sanitary Inspectors all left and by nightfall only seventeen Police and nine Firemen remained to carry on as best they could.
19.00 The Queen's Cinema was hit by a bomb or shell but
little damage was done.
