Dead, dying and wounded were lying all over the streets. Shaukiwan dispensary was crowded with injured. His Excellency congratulated P. S. A. 19 Hill who was doing very good work with the help of a useless Chinese doctor who attended spasmodically. Visits were paid to the Salesian Institute Hospital and to the local Military Headquarters at the Taikoo School. Air raids continued. The district remained under heavy shell fire. Kennedy Town Market was struck by bombs and shells. Two shells landed in Clarence Terrace causing many casualties. Three Chinese were arrested as suspected Fifth Column- ists at Jubilee Fort and were handed over to the C.I. Police Headquarters. Police made many arrests in con- nection with the looting that was going on in the go- down area and these were effectively dealt with. The district was very heavily bombarded. Police from a Dispersal Point 177 Main Street evacuated to Quarry Bay at about 16.00 hours. During the evening the bombardment became even more intensified, particu- larly in the vicinity of the Station, and pickets could only proceed a few yards at a time and had frequently to take shelter.
King's Road between the Taikoo Sugar Refinery and the Tsang Fook Piano Company had by this time suffered very severe damage from shelling which continued throughout the day. The roadway was badly broken up and several big buildings completely wrecked, including the Ritz, the Cathay Hotel, the Paint & Lacquer Works and Tsat Tsui Mui Police Quarters. Civilians suffered severe casualties and a number of dead were lying in the road-
way.
Owing to heavy shelling of the Shek Tong Tsui area, the Unit transferred to St. John's Hall, Bonham Road. Further complaints were made of shops hoarding rice. Central depots were set up by the Officer in Charge at Aberdeen and Aplichau under Police and Village Guard supervision. The arrangement worked satisfac- torily.
Wanchai water front was again subjected to severe bombardment from Kowloon. Pill boxes from Tonnochy Road to Arsenel Street were systematically wrecked. Sixteen direct hits were made on No.2 Station. The station was narrowly missed by bombs but the majority fell near Lockhart Road Market.
