The Divisional Inspector, Water Police, was employed with Harbour Office officials dismantling the masts of native craft at Causeway Bay, a permitted anchor- age, as the Military Authorities complained that thei line of fire was masked. This continued on the next day also. Even then the position was not considered entirely satisfactory by the Harbour Master who re- ported to the Military that he still considered that a good line of fire had not been made available. The Unit patrolled Western District, queen's Road Central and West and Sai Wan Ho Market at Shaukiwan in connection with reported disturbances at rice shop Additional police were left at the shops to help to keep order but no further action was required. p.m. A complaint was received that a gang of men were de-

manding "protection" money from residents in Staun- ton Street. Police parties under Mr. Wright Nooth, Assistant Superintendent of Police, and Chief Inspec- tor Rozeskwy took drastic action against eight men. Several shells landed in close proximity of Shaukiwar Station. L. S. A. 103 Hendrick was wounded in the shoulder by a splinter though sheltering in the cells The Sikh Police all deserted and took to the hills. Mr. Heath, Assistant Superintendent of Police, visit- ed and decided with Commissioner of Police's approva. that the Station should be evacuated to a building next door to Quarry Bay Station. (Henceforth describ- ed as Shaukiwan Station). The evacuation was complet ed by 17.30 hours.

Air raids continued.

Police Headquarters and Central were shelled. The Emergency Unit and Traffic Offices, A.R.P. Store roo and European single men's quarters at Central receivi heavy damage. Remainder of Police evacuated to the Gloucester and Pedder Buildings. A guard was left under P. S. A. 139 Bower to ensure the security of the buildings evacuated.. (Gloucester Building is hence- forth described as Police Headquarters and Pedder Building as Central Station.) (See Entry No.6 of the 16.12.41 for previous evacuation of the first half of the Police.)

Owing to severe pressure of work Inspector Clarke, Traffic Inspector/Hong Kong obtained the services of five additional Europeans, Sub Inspector Scrim and L. S. A. 10 Sargeant were sent to No. 2 Station, L. S. A. 74 Sullivan to Western and L. S. A.49 Channing to Upper Levels. Two repair shops were set up, one at the Gloucester Building and one at Central to carry out repairs of as many vehicles as possible belonging to all departments besides Police. Transport generally began to become very scare due to accidents

many occurring during the black out, enemy action and deliberate damage inflicted by Chinese drivers. The Guards Office transferred to the Central Magis- tracy building to obtain better protection from air raids.

Shelling and bombing continued. Four direct hits by shells were registered on No. 2 Station. Heavy bombing attacks were also made on the station with possibly the Lewis Gun post previously established in the Sta-
