Owing to acute rice shortage 20 bags of rice were specially purchased from Major Manners of the Kowloon Wharf & Godown Company for Tsim Sha Tsui Land and Water Police, the Station Europeans putting up the money.

The Hong Kong Praya from Queen's Pier to Kennedy Town was cleared of native craft by the Water Police. Many vessels had to be towed.

Several calls were received during the day to deal with rice riots. A fire in Portland Street, Mong Kok, was attended by the Unit.

After conference with His Excellency the Governor the Hon. Commissioner of Police visited and held preliminary di scussion with Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, regarding Police arrangements for the probable evacuation of Kowloon. He informed the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, that it might have to take place some time after 18.00 hours the same night.

a.m. Several false telephone calls re armed robberies or

other crime were received.

12.00 A Canadian Officer came to station and while optimis-

tic admitted that the enemy had broken through at Tsun Wan.

13.00 Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, went to

office at Tsim Sha Tsui from Kowloon Police Head- quarters in order to secure privacy and with the Commissioner of Police 's previous permission informed the Brigadier, Kowloon Infantry Brigade and the Har- bour Master of possible Police evacuation taking place any time after 18.00 hours the same night. The Brigadier expressed extreme surprise at the news and stated he could hold Kowloon indefinitely - at the very least one month. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, arranged with the Harbour Master to have a ferry launch waiting at Police disposal at No.3 Wharf, Kowloon Godowns, from 18.00 hours on- wards. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, instructed by the Commissioner of Police that he should not pass the information concerning evacua- tion on even to Sub Area Commanders.

The Unit received calls all the morning for the open- ing up of rice shops in Queen's Road, Des Voeux Road and several smaller streets in Central district. The shops had had to close owing to the crowds trying to rush them. The Unit paid a number of visits, res- tored order and kept the shops open by means of mobile patrols.
