In a speech on February 8th, 1944, the Japanese Governor of Hongkong stated that a time may come shortly when there will not be a single ship calling at Hongkong, in which case the people will have to depend on Hongkong itself for their existence. If rice is available the people will have rice to eat. If there are only sweet potatoes they will only eat sweet potatoes, and if there are only beans they will have to eat beans. The Governor was careful to point out that it is not because there are no ships available but that all ships may have to be used for the purpose of attaining final · victory.
The Island of Hongkong is a comparatively barren area as regards agriculture and the above statement by the Governor emphasises once again the dire straits to which the population of this once prosperous British colony have been reduced.
