A problem is presented by the entry of a large number of Portuguese and Chinese clerks from Macao, some of whom have been temporarily accommodated in the French Mission. This building however, was originally intended for junior officers of the C.A.S. so it will be necessary to find fresh accommodation either for the officers or for Portuguese employees.
The question of payment for accommodation in hotels was

About 2,258 non-Asiatic employees have been fed daily on dry rations provided by the Navy, and fresh rations from the Supply Department. With effect from 12 Oct., the Army are taking over the dry ration commitment, but the Navy still have large quantities of rations available, and state that if necessary, they can produce 1,000 rations a day for an indefinite period. The dry ration situation therefore, is well in hand.
Hitherto personnel in Essential Services have been fed free
of charge, but the matter is now being reviewed with a view to charges being made for meals in order to reduce the cost to public funds.
