i. Stuff. work is hampered by the fact that little more than one
tenth of our pre-war personnel have reported for duty.
j. Transportation.
This most important matter of lack of
transport has considerably hampered the checking of the various
properties controlled by this Department.
DUCATION.
Government Schools. The anchai school is the only Jovernment
school habitable and was reopened on the 14th.Oct.
The premises of the Chinese ..C.. in ridges street was taken
over as a Vernacular School and opened on 22na.Jct.
b. Grant Schools. Of the 15 Grant schools open in 1941, lz
reopened during October. Buildings and equipment are for the
most part intact as they were in continuous occupation during
the Japanese regime. Total enrolment is approx. 5,000.
c. Subsidized Schools.
In 1941 there were 153 in 1945 & have
reopened with a total enrolment of 900.
d. Private Schools. (Leceiving no subsidy) 52 have reopened with
an estimated enrolment of 6,100. Two private schools have been
refused permission to reopen.
e. The total number of children attending schools in longkong &
Kowloon amounts to about 13,000.
f. staff. 146 have now rejoined out of a total of 205.
3. Future Plans. It is intended to reopen Yaumati Government
School as soon as the Commandos have moved out. This matter
is receiving attention.
It is further intended to reapx opan two more Government
Vernacular se.ools in requisitioned premises.
