Canadian Representation at Japanese Surrender.

q

I enclose a copy of telegram No.176, sent to the Canadian Government on 20th August after consultation with you, together with the Canadian Government's telegram No.195 of the same date in reply. Would you kindly inform Admiral Fraser of the Canadian Government's decision about the Manila сектоту?

2. In paragraph 5 of our telegram to the Canadian Government No.170 of 13th August, we said that, having regard to the share of Canadian troops in the defence of Hong Kong, we should hope to have Canadian participation in the acceptance of surrender there and suggested that the best way in which this could be effected was by a Canadian warship sailing with the British force there. As you know, the Canadian Government are sending H.M.C.S.Prince Robert from Sydney. Sydney.

It is not clear to us, however, that Admiral Fraser has been asked to arrange for the formal association of a Canadian officer with the ceremony at Hong Kong and I suggest that this point might be mentioned to him. There has been some ́ mention of the Canadian Military Attache from Chungking going to Hong Kong with some troops which General Wedemeyer is believed to be sending there, and, if he does, it would presumably be a matter for local arrangement as to exactly which Canadian officer or officers attended the ceremony as Canadian representatives.

C.G.JARRETT, ESQ.,

ADMIRALTY.

Yours sincerely,

SEBS
