The suggestion at (a) was originally made by the American General Olmsted and has the support of the Ambassador.

7 explains the proposal at (b) telegraphed in summarised form in 24. On this please see last four paragraphs of my minute of 25th April. has written to the Foreign Office saying that we see advantages in the proposed extension of the functions of the British Military Mission.
After a superficial reading I see equal advantages in the appointment of a liaison officer with the U.S. Army H.., particularly if it were possible to propose a man with knowledge of e interests in Hong Kong as well as in China. not, however, digested all this material, since, in accordance with lir. Gent's instructions, I hasten to send it on to Mr. MacDougall, Mr. Mayle and Mr. Gaine for their comments.
