Dear Gent
(34)
I have received a copy of the Note issued under Colonial Office Reference 541444/7/45 of the Meeting held on 23 July to discuss possible action in regard to Civil Affairs Administration in HONG KONG.
I should be grateful if a slight amendment could be issued in respect of paragraph 5 of the Note, which does not quite accurately represent the true position so far as we can see it at the moment.
Could the following be substituted for paragraph 5 :-
"If, on the other hand, the Japanese evacuated
the Colony, a token British force (say_a battalion) could possibly be made available to join with Sino-American forces in ecuring its possession".
