In connection with the Hong Kong Volunteer Company now in India (file 36550/7) Major Owen Hughes brought Brigadier J. M. Calvert, D.5.0. to see Mr. Paskin and myself yesterday morning. The purpose of the visit was in order that the Brigadier might give us further information about the Volunteers whom he commanded in Hong Kong before the war and for whom he still has a considerable interest. He was not able to give us much additional information about the Volunteers since he had not lately been in touch with them, but what was of more interest was that the Brigadier explained that he himself belonged to the most secret organisation known as S...S. (Special Air Services). It appears that this Unit had been responsible for dropping men by parachute behind the lines in Belgium and Holland, etc. and that he now hopes to engage in similar activities in the Far East. If so, it is his intention to try, if possible to use some of the Chinese Hong Kong Volunteers who had been employed in General Wingate's expeditions in Burma.
2. This proposal seems to be exactly what we are looking for in connection with our plans to have an emergency party ready to forestall any possible seizure of Hong Kong by irregular Chinese forces. Owing to the fact that it was thought that Major Owen Hughes was not perhaps aware of these plans, they were not discussed with the Brigadier, but since he himself mentioned 3.0.E. and the name of
Mr. Colin Mackenzie, Mr. Paskin suggested that he should see Mr. MacKenzie and tell him that he had recently been discussing.
