He did
not ask Commander Shepherd to make any request for money from His Majesty's Government, but Commander Shepherd thinks that he would appreciate it if some could be supplied. Commander Shepherd suggested to me £20 a month as being ample since money has a very restricted use. This would give him enough also to pay to his Batman such an allowance as the Batman could make purchases with in the camp.
Sir Mark Young has, however, a running account with Whiteway Laidlaw's shop in Shanghai for clothing/etc., and has unlimited credit there. His account is supposed to be now about £200 in debit but no request has been made or is expected for this to be settled, the firm knowing that it will be met after the war and in fact Commander Shepherd has no doubt that they would prefer not to be paid in the present currency of the place. I am taking up separately with Colonel Cole the matter of an allowance for Sir Mark Young.
Commander Shepherd is pretty certain that
all those who have gone through the ordeal of internment at Japanese hands for many months will be unfit for any solid work until after a substantial period of convalescence and he is particularly apprehensive that conditions will very greatly deteriorate in the period immediately preceding the final Japanese defeat.
Commander Shepherd will be back in London next week and will be available to come and talk about any matters on which we would like to question him, after studying the annexed despatch.
I think that the Secretary of State would himself be interested to have a few minutes talk with Commander Shepherd about Sir Mark Young, and it would be very much appreciated if he could find the time to do so.
